After serving the Superior Court of California as General Counsel, Commissioner and finally Presiding Judge, Grant V. Barrett returned to private practice and offers his extensive legal experience and training to private and public sector organizations navigating the technological and ethical challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution – Big Data and Machine Learning.
Grant is passionate about current trends in the law and fostering meaningful innovation through technology. His interests and areas of training are privacy, security and disruptive technologies furthering his efforts to develop responsible best practices in the law, government and private sectors. Grant’s specific practice areas are Privacy, Security, Data Protection, Contract Drafting / Negotiation, and Regulatory Compliance. (e.g., COPPA, GDPR, GLBA, HIPPA / HITECH, SOX and PCI-DSS).
As a Judicial Officer with the Court, he presided over jury and court trials, discovery litigation, arbitration and has conducted thousands of mediated settlement conferences. Grant enjoyed the challenges of handling a busy court calendar with responsibility for the full spectrum of legal issues from business, civil, criminal, family law, juvenile, probate, and real estate / tax disputes. In 2013, he was honored as California’s Judicial Officer of the Year. With his experience and training, Grant is uniquely qualified to manage the most complex legal issues. His intellect, ethical standards and commitment to excellence in his work make him an asset to any project, large or small.
Grant Barrett JD, CIPP earned his Juris Doctor (JD) with honors from Empire College School of Law, California, USA. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Business and Finance with honors from California State University, East Bay. He is a United States Military Veteran (1st Psy.Ops.). Grant is an active member of the State Bar of California (State Bar Number 178019). He is admitted to practice before all courts in the State of California and US Federal District Courts, as well as the United States Supreme Court.
Grant Barrett is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US Private Sector, CIPP/E Europe) and member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) a non-profit organization advocating for and sharing best practices regarding privacy in the information age.
